ARCHITECTURE

BUILDINGS & THINGS

For the past 4 years, I studied architecture at UC Berkeley, complemented by minors in sustainable design and city planning. Through this experience, I explored how the design of spaces profoundly influences our daily lives, focusing on the intersection of social and environmental dynamics. My practice involved crafting physical spaces and structures that thoughtfully consider elements such as form, circulation, structure, and materiality, all of which play a crucial role in shaping effective design solutions.

01 Between Land & Sea

Ferry Building

ARCH 100C Clark Thenhaus

Fall 2023

Location: Alameda, CA

The ferry building features two aggregated cubes that converge into a central core, creating a dynamic form that rises into a bell tower. This architectural approach blurs the boundaries between land and water, with the structure elevated on carved "legs" that allow for a continuous ground plane, seamlessly integrating outdoor activities, such as the flea market, into the building's design.

This architectural approach blurs the boundaries between land and water, with the structure elevated on carved "legs" that allow for a continuous ground plane, seamlessly integrating outdoor activities, such as the flea market, into the building's design.

The carved "legs" are adaptable to future rising sea levels, expected to rise by one meter in the next century. The carved undersides allow for water flow and small boat access, while solid massing creates private spaces, and voids enhance circulation and social interaction.

The materiality, inspired by a texture board, encourages plant growth and wildlife habitats, fostering a memorable human experience with social stairs and a second-floor auditorium that offers breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline and sunset.

02 Revolve

Glass Blowing Studio

ARCH 100D Elizabeth Bishop

Spring 2024

Location: Mission District, SF

The design features an undulating, twisted form that separates and interlocks artist and public spaces, creating a dynamic relationship between them. Distinct pathways for artists and the public converge in areas of interaction, with a ribbon-like circulation guiding visitors through the studio.

Materials reflect this duality: artists inhabit enclosed spaces with GRC rain screen panels and concrete walls, while public areas are open and airy, enhanced by double-glazed U-channel glass. Entries and viewpoints connect to the vibrant streetscape of the Mission district, inviting the energy of the streets into the garden space and the studio.
